Greek aluminum producer Elval, which forms the aluminum rolling division of ElvalHalcor SA, has placed an order with Primetals to upgrade its drive system at a 6-high cold rolling mill in Oinofyta, some 60 kilometers north of Athens.
According to Primetals, the modernization will increase reliability and resolve availability issues primarily caused by an obsolete drive system. The complete revamp of the drive system is planned for January 2026. The upgrade involves the installation of a new SL150 cycloconverter, including drive control systems, a new power section, auxiliary equipment, and spare parts. The existing 6-megawatt synchronous motor is retained as part of the project. Primetals Technologies will also provide commissioning services. A notable feature of this project is the smooth utilization of the drive transformer, which is made possible thanks to the new control system, says Primetals. This enhancement results in a prolonged equipment lifetime and increased availability. Additionally, the modernization ensures the drive system meets current and future spare-part supply conditions. Elval is through a strong production base across 15 plants a leading Aluminum producer. In terms of hot-rolling capacity thy company operates the second-largest aluminum rolling plant in Europe, after Alunurf in Germany. Source: Primetals Technologies
