ArcelorMittal relies on photovoltaics in Neuwied

A new photovoltaics system on the factory roof of the ArcelorMittal Steel Service Centre in Neuwied, Germany, is planned to make annual production of 4.1 million kilowatt hours possible. This would achieve network independence of over 50 percent at the site.

Together with the Enverio power company, ArcelorMittal Auto Processing Deutschland is implementing a large photovoltaics roof project for its Steel Service Centre (SSC). The planned system is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by around 2000 tonnes per year. As part of a lease use and energy supply contract with ArcelorMittal, Enverio is implementing the concept at the ArcelorMittal site. iAccess is involved in the project as the executing company.
The plant could reach a maximum output of 4,200 kilowatts peak, which would allow for an estimated electricity production of around 4.1 million kilowatt hours per year. This amount of power could supply more than 1,000 single-family homes per year. The energy produced will be directly fed into the ArcelorMittal systems. The site can therefore supply over 50 percent of its own power in future. Excess energy that is not used by ArcelorMittal will flow into the public grid and will be compensated accordingly.
ArcelorMittal Auto Processing Deutschland GmbH in Neuwied is one of the largest of ArcelorMittal’s 25 Steel Service Centres in Europe. It has produced high-quality sheet steel for 25 years for the automotive sector, its suppliers and other industries. The photovoltaics project in Neuwied also contributes to the Group’s targets: By 2030, ArcelorMittal intends to reduce its CO2 emissions in Europe by 35 percent.
Felix Kerk, COO of the SSC in Germany, sees this as an important contribution to decarbonising the site: “In a transforming steel market on the way to carbon neutrality, we are living up to our responsibility as a processing site and are already minimising our contribution thanks to local initiatives. Our objective is to operate in a completely climate-neutral manner by 2030.” According to Kerk, the new photovoltaics system marks the beginning of the partnership between Enverio and ArcelorMittal. Further cooperation is planned in future with the aim of reconciling sustainability and economic efficiency.
