With the upgrade of electric and automation systems for the pickling-tandem cold rolling mill, Baosteel intends to meet current and future production requirements.
Recently, Primetals has received an order for an extensive modernization of Chinese steel producer Baosteel’s PLTCM at its Baoshan plant in Shanghai province, China. Baosteel is a part of the China Baowu Steel Group and the world’s largest steel producer. According to Primetals, the scope includes the supply and implementation of comprehensive electrics and automation systems, such as Level 1 automation, measuring equipment, digital assistant systems, and motors and drives. A key component of the project is the installation of a Central Operation Cockpit (COC), which will provide a bird’s-eye view of the entire production line.
Originally built in 1998 to produce tinplate, the PLTCM is being upgraded to ensure Baosteel’s operations remain efficient and competitive. In addition to the new automation system, the project includes new measurement equipment systems and customer-supplied mechanical equipment for the entry section, a welding machine, a scale breaker, pickling tanks, a side trimmer, and new work-roll drive trains for stand No. 4 and 5. The modernization is scheduled to be completed in the first quarter of 2026.
One operator can monitor several areas of the plant at the same time
The highly innovative operational system Central Operation Cockpit (COC) enables a single operator to control multiple plant sections, reducing the need for manual intervention in the production process. This system enhances productivity, stabilizes production, and ensures reproducible, high-quality end-products. At Baosteel’s Baoshan plant, the COC will be supported by 63 live cameras, including three equipped with integrated fire detection technology. Baosteel’s new COC will integrate several digital assistant systems, such as automated coil identification, strip position identification, and side trimming scrap detection.
