Feralpi Stahl has been producing steel in Riesa for over 30 years, always with an eye towards the welfare of both people and the environment, in keeping with the vision of the company’s founder Carlo N. Pasini. The planned investments of the Feralpi Group for the coming years, reaching more than 220 million euros, strengthen the deep roots of the Feralpi Group at its German site, where approximately 800 employees manufacture steel products for the construction industry.
Uwe Reinecke, Director of Feralpi Stahl, says: “Riesa is our home. We want to produce green steel here in future, always keeping in mind that the steel mill is surrounded by industry but also by people’s homes. This is the reason that we began publishing our most important key figures in 2012 to give the public a look behind the scenes, in the truest sense of the word.”
This ongoing effort has received due recognition, and as one of only two steel mills in Germany, Feralpi Stahl is allowed to display the EMAS seal. The adherence to strict parameters is a requirement for achieving the highest EU award for quality in the area of environmental management. The guidelines for this award go far beyond the demands of the current DIN standards, and the employees in Riesa fully commit to fulfilling these requirements.
Dr Mathias Schreiber, director of the integrated management system, confirms: “Our effort for the environment is not a trend we discovered recently; it has always been the foundation of our actions. The figures and our efforts at communication also show that we take every comment from our neighbourhood very seriously and that we always find new ways to consistently lower our emissions.”
One example is the de-dusting plant at the site in Riesa, which is one of a kind and serves as an example of the best available technology, BAT for short, and as a reference plant for one of the most effective de-dusting and dioxin-reduction plants in electric steel mills.
The Feralpi Group will use the amount of more than 220 million euros primarily to build a second, emission-free rolling mill, a proprietary power transformation station and a new plant for treating scrap metals, as well as to finance an adjusted concept for logistics at the factory premises. Combined, these investment projects will have a lasting positive effect on the environmental balance of this steel producer from Riesa.
