Tata Steel to install acid regeneration plant in Port Talbot

Tata Steel has commissioned Andritz to supply an acid regeneration plant for its steelworks in Port Talbot, Wales, UK. The new plant will meet the highest environmental standards and support the planned capacity expansion of the steelworks' pickling line.

The plant will be capable of regenerating up to 6,340 l/h of waste acid, securing maximum reuse of spent acid in the pickling process and minimizing waste generation. The system will operate efficiently both at the current pickling capacity of 1,200,000 metric tons per year and the future capacity of 1,800,000 mtpy.
Tata Steel’s Project Manager Paul Boxer said: “The new plant will remove the need for importing vast quantities of acid from overseas and exporting the spent liquids. This is a big step to decarbonize our pickling operations.”
Andritz’s latest exhaust cleaning technology ensures emission levels well below regulatory limits. The integrated ECOmode function enables significant energy savings, particularly after the capacity expansion, further supporting Tata Steel’s efficiency and sustainability goals, the company said. The order value will not be disclosed.
Advanced process control, a high degree of automation, and modern cyber security features ensure stable, safe, and continuous plant operation.
The scope of supply includes the design and supply of all mechanical and electrical equipment as well as supervision of installation and commissioning. Commissioning is scheduled for late 2027.
