The two companies have announced a strategic partnership to electrify high-temperature metal production using RDH technology. The collaboration aims to replace fossil fuel-based process heat in high-temperature processes in the metal industries.
Coolbrook, a transformational engineering and technology company focusing on industrial electrification, and Tenova, have partnered to advance the deployment of Coolbrook’s RotoDynamic Heater (RDH) technology. This collaboration aims to replace fossil fuel-based heating with clean, CO₂-free electricity in high-temperature processes across the iron, steel, and broader metals industries. It marks a significant milestone in enabling sustainable production processes that will shape the future of the metals industry.
According to Tenova, the RDH technology, capable of generating temperatures exceeding 1000 °C and reaching up to 1700 °C, offers a transformative solution for decarbonizing some of the most energy-intensive industrial operations. When implemented at scale, it has the potential to reduce more than 2.4 billion tons of CO₂ emissions annually.
Initially, the partnership will focus on integrating RDH into Tenova’s proprietary acid regeneration systems, with plans to expand into a wide range of industrial applications. By combining Coolbrook’s technology with Tenova’s engineering expertise and global reach, the two companies aim to deliver fully electrified, high-performance, and sustainable solutions tailored to the evolving needs of the metals industry. The ultimate goal is to establish RDH as a new industry standard by 2030, marking a major step forward in the journey toward net-zero industrial production, Tenova says.
Decarbonisation through electrification
“Our partnership with Tenova is a significant step in advancing industrial electrification and accelerating the transition to clean energy. By integrating our RDH technology with Tenova’s innovative solutions, we can develop joint offerings to decarbonize highly challenging applications that have previously been impossible to electrify. Through this partnership, we are positioned to deliver broader, more sophisticated solutions to our customers than either company could achieve independently. Our partnership with Tenova is a key milestone in our strategy to establish a strong and collaborative ecosystem around Coolbrook’s RotoDynamic technology, ensuring its rapid industrial-scale adoption", says Coolbrook CEO Joonas Rauramo.
“At Tenova, we are committed to driving the metals industries towards a more sustainable future. Our collaboration with Coolbrook marks a key milestone in decarbonizing high-temperature industrial processes by combining Coolbrook’s innovative RDH™ technology with our advanced solutions. By replacing fossil fuels with renewable electricity, we can dramatically reduce CO₂ emissions but also achieve a major step in process efficiency - making production cleaner, faster, and more cost-effective. This is a powerful example of how technological innovation can accelerate both sustainability and operational excellence in our industry”, added Antonio Catalano Executive Vice President of the Tenova Downstream BU.
