The South Korean aluminium producer Ulsan Aluminum is modernising its hot rolling mill in Ulsan. The upgrade of the automation systems of the 3-stand hot finishing mill, to be carried out by Primetals, is intended to increase IT security and future-proof production.
The project scope includes system upgrades of both the Level 1 and Level 2 automation systems, virtualization of all servers, and modernization of the process automation’s human-machine interface (HMI) system. The main benefits for Ulsan Aluminum are significantly increased IT security, reduced OPEX-related costs, and future-proof operations. According to Primetals, this upgrade will enable Ulsan Aluminum to smoothly integrate digital assistants and other digitalization solutions. All systems will be operated on virtual servers, which reduces maintenance needs and enables fast scaling of digital services. As a result of the modernization, Ulsan Aluminum can expect improved product quality and increased productivity. Plant shutdown and implementation is scheduled for September to October 2025. Formed in 2017, Ulsan Aluminum is a joint venture of Novelis and Kobe Steel. The company is a leading supplier of aluminum flat-rolled products to various market segments, including automotive, beverage cans, and specialty aluminum applications.
