Liberty Steel wants to convert its integrated steelworks Dunafer from the Blast Furnace–Basic Oxygen Furnace (BF–BOF) route to a electric steel mill with the help of Chinese plant manufacturer CISDI. As a first step, the contractual partners in Shanghei have now signed a contract for the preparation of a feasibility study for the installation of an electric arc furnace (EAF) in Dunaújváros.
Liberty is talking about an electric arc furnace with a capacity of over 1.5 million tons per year. CISDI will use patented technologies to equip the energy-efficient electric arc furnace in such a way that it can be flexibly charged with raw materials. The new furnace is expected to significantly improve the competitiveness of the Dunaújváros plant and reduce direct CO2 emissions by 80%. On June 12, Dunafer had already stopped operating its two coke oven batteries. The contract is of crucial importance for Liberty Dunafer's transition to environmentally friendly steel production. The overall project includes the installation of a modern electric steel plant as well as the modernization of the secondary metallurgy and the hot strip mill. The modernization measures are necessary to enable the company to supply high-quality products for the automotive sector in Hungary. The conversion of the Liberty steel plant in Dunaújváros is a development project within the Belt & Road Initiative of China's President Xi. The project is supported by the Hungarian and Chinese governments and financed by Chinese banks under the leadership of CITIC Bank and the Chinese export and credit insurance company Sinosure.
