Tata Steel Nederland has commissioned Tenova to develop a new steel production line with electric arc furnace at its IJmuiden site.
In 2023, Tata Steel Nederland launched its current Green Steel Plan to convert the production of liquid steel in order to drastically reduce the environmental impact of the IJmuiden site. The project is based on the installation of an Energiron Direct Reduction Plant (DRP) and a new steelmaking line to replace the largest blast furnace at the site (BF7) and one of the coke plants (KGF2).
The overall contract includes engineering, supply and consultancy for a 3 million tonne electric arc furnace (product name Consteel) and an electromagnetic agitator (Consteerrer) developed under an exclusive global partnership with ABB. The project also includes the secondary metallurgical equipment (ladle furnaces and RH vacuum degassers) required to refine the liquid metal from the electric arc furnace to the quality required to meet current operating specifications (high quality steel for the automotive sector). The production facilities would be complemented by a range of innovative technologies aimed at minimizing the environmental impact of the new plant, including an innovative flue gas treatment plant, a waste energy recovery system and a dry slag granulation plant. Eneriron, a joint development by Tenova and Danieli, was already selected last year as the technology for the direct reduction plant.
“The demand for steel continues to grow, with an increasing need for recycled and sustainably produced steel,” said Hans van den Berg, CEO of Tata Steel Nederland. “Thanks to our location on the North Sea, we are in one of the best locations to make the transition to more responsible steel production - clean, green and circular.”
