Cold Briquetting

Cold briquetting is a widely-accepted process for the compaction of granular material. Using roller presses for the briquetting process, material can be compacted to a defined form and size, enabling its inherent resources to be utilized in subsequent production cycles.

Common applications for cold briquetting are:

  • The processing of steel mill residues
  • The processing of fines from direct reduced iron (DRI)
  • Size enlargement of material for rotary hearth furnaces
The following pages will give you more details regarding technology, applications and testing in the area of cold briquetting.

Hot Briquetting

Köppern continues to play the pioneering role in the development of the hot briquetting process. Backed by our extensive experience, we are now the world’s leading manufacturer of hot briquetting machinery and related systems.

The term ‘hot briquetting’ is used when the temperature of the feed material requires the use of highly heat-resistant roller presses that incorporate special arrangements for cooling.

Materials are briquetted under hot conditions if binding characteristics are activated at high temperatures.

Innovation leadership
Following the successful application of roller presses for briquetting and compaction, Köppern developed new and innovative solutions that have revolutionized the productivity of the crushing and grinding process for many materials.

Keeping the basic concept – converting fine materials into agglomerates by applying high pressures between two counter-rotating rollers – in mind, Köppern also found that inter-particle comminution in a material bed is the ideal solution for the crushing and grinding requirements for many materials. Initially introduced for clinker and slag grinding in the cement industry, high-pressure comminution has now made its way into the hard ore and minerals sector. Whilst contradictory at first sight, the roller press as a single machine technology can be successfully applied in both briquetting and compaction as well as comminution.

About us

Company details

From its beginning more than 120 years ago, Maschinenfabrik Köppern GmbH & Co. KG has developed into a well-experienced medium-sized enterprise offering specialized equipment all over the world.

Among our range of products and activities the development and fabrication of roller presses are to be found as well as engineering services for complete plants containing roller presses for briquetting and compacting of fine-grained bulk materials.

There is a wide range of applications for presses by Köppern in the metallurgical industry. They are used for briquetting the fine fractions of e.g. caustic lime, coke/coal, ores, metallurgical residues, feed materials in reduction processes, cold application of direct reduced iron with binders or hot applications at approx. 700°C (HBI).

High-pressure ore and minerals sizing technology has been a new field of application for roller presses for about 30 years.

The development and production of composite materials for wear protection of pressing tools is another main focus of our product range.
