MIDREX NG™, the natural gas-based configuration of the MIDREX® Process, is the most widely-used technology for the production of all forms of direct reduced iron (DRI) products. Each year, MIDREX® Plants produce more than 60% of the entire world’s DRI and more than 80% of the DRI produced by all shaft furnace DRI technologies.

Natural gas is the cleanest, greenest ironmaking fuel and plays a major factor in helping many industries cut emissions and improve the world’s overall air quality. Natural gas is a fossil fuel hydrocarbon gas mixture consisting primarily of methane (CH4).  In order to use natural gas for ironmaking, the natural gas needs to be reformed into a usable reducing gas that is high in hydrogen (H2) and carbon monoxide (CO) content.

MIDREX NG™, through use of the patented MIDREX® Reformer, cost effectively makes reducing gas for the iron ore reduction reactions that take place in the MIDREX® Shaft Furnace. The MIDREX® Reformer externally generates reducing gas and further optimizes the MIDREX® Shaft Furnace performance by converting recycled gas (from the iron reduction reactions) along with fresh natural gas into H2 and CO to produce additional reducing gas.

MXCOL® (pronounced “M-X-COAL”) is the name and trademark for the use of syngas derived from coal in the commercially proven MIDREX® Direct Reduction Process.

MXCOL® can use reducing gas from several sources of syngas:

  • Commercial gasifiers using a variety of low cost fuels
  • Export gas from the coal-based COREX® Hot Metal Process by Siemens VAI Metals Technologies GmbH
  • The MIDREX® Thermal Reactor System™ (TRS®).
The first commercial application of MIDREX® Technology using syngas from coal was commissioned in 1999 at ArcelorMittal Steel South Africa (formerly Saldanha Steel). Here the export gas from a COREX® Plant is used in a MIDREX® Shaft Furnace to supply DRI to the meltshop in addition to the hot metal from the COREX® Plant.

World’s Largest HDRI/CDRI Plant Completes Construction in Algeria

Tosyali Algeria 2.5 Million Tons/Year MIDREX NG™ Direct Reduction Plant

December 17, 2018

Bethioua (Oran), ALGERIA – Dr. Suhat Korkmaz, CEO of Tosyali Holding, recently announced completion of the state-of-the-art direct reduction ironmaking plant capable of simultaneous production of hot and cold direct reduced iron (HDRI and CDRI), which will feed the electric arc furnace (EAF) melt shop of a new Tosyali Algeria iron and steel facility. The announcement followed a site visit by Youcef Yousfi, Algeria Minister of Industry and Mining, hosted by Fuat Tosyali, Chairman of Tosyali Holding.

The 2.5 million tons/per year plant was supplied by Midrex Technologies, Inc. and its consortium partner, Paul Wurth.

“The MIDREX® DRI combination plant provides Tosyali Algeria greater flexibility in producing high quality steel products,” Dr. Suhat said, “and will eliminate the need to purchase imported scrap.” 

Commissioning of the plant began in July 2018, and production of cold DRI (CDRI) started in late November 2018. Hot DRI (HDRI) production is expected to begin in February 2019, which also is the scheduled official plant start-up.
