TSD - Thermographic Slag Detection

The AMEPA Thermographic Slag Detection TSD is a proven system with more than 100 installations at BOF and EAF worldwide. By evaluating long-wave infrared radiation (far IR), it provides a clear colour image for distinguishing between steel and slag. Disturbing factors, e. g. background radiation are compensated and the system is automatically calibrated to the current alloy and steel temperature. A plausibility check is carried out parallel to the automated alarm if flowing slag is detected.

SRM - Online Surface Roughness Measurement

The SRM sensor of AMEPA enables measurements on all common surfaces at 45 ° or perpendicular to the rolling direction - as stipulated by SEP 1940 and DIN EN10049. The SRM system measures the roughness distribution over the length and width of the coil and helps to optimise the various process parameters (e. g. wear and change of work rolls, adjustment of rolling forces). In addition to the roughness values, a microscopic image of all types of structured surfaces (GI, GA, EDT, EBT, Mill finish, etc.) is provided to the user.

OFM - Online Oil Film Thickness Measurement

The OFM system of AMEPA offers a precise online measurement of the oil film thickness for steel and aluminium strips in rolling and pressing mills and enables a complete documentation of the oil layer for each produced and processed coil. OFIS 2.0 BT - Portable Oil Film Thickness Measurement

The AMEPA OFIS 2.0 BT handheld unit measures oil films and wax layers in the range of 0.1 to 5 g/m² (10 to 500 mg/ft²) within seconds. The device is already calibrated for the most common qualities of steel and aluminium sheets. A customized calibration is possible. All data can be conveniently transferred to the supplied tablet PC via a Bluetooth interface.

Electromagnetic slag detection in steel mills
New software makes slag readings available factory-wide.

Würselen/Germany, May 3, 2019    At METEC exhibition AMEPA will present the new AMEPA Report software which automatically analyses the measured values of the slag detection sensors in the steel mill using new methods of digital signal processing. For example, problems in the area of well block, upper nozzle or slide gate of casting ladles are detected very quickly, and the measured values are available throughout the plant.

More than 300 systems of the AMEPA electromagnetic slag detection system ESD are already in use in steelworks on ladles and converters worldwide. These systems report an alert as soon as there is a danger that the slag produced in each process step will be transferred to the next vessel.

The AMEPA Report software analyzes the measured values of the ESD sensors with digital signal processing and automatically evaluates the data based on rules. On casting ladles, measured values deviating from the nominal values are detected very quickly, for example in the area of well block, upper nozzle or slide gate. This is done without taking the time to track individual value curves. This evaluation can also be used to schedule maintenance work.

All status messages are presented to the steelworker in table form, and the measurement results in graphic form. The results can be sent automatically to previously configured user groups as shift or daily reports in the form of e-mails at specific times.

As part of the increasing cross-process networking, the system stores measurement data and system results in a database. Detailed data, current and historical, is available to users in their company-wide network.

In addition, a web server makes contents of the database available within the customer network which can be accessed at any time with standard web browsers. Thus, the AMEPA Report software makes data about accompanying slag available to different user groups at any time in an adapted visualization.

The software allows the user to adapt the parameters of the ESD system to the user's product range. Remote maintenance and access to data for online customer support by AMEPA specialists are also available.

The new software can be used for existing slag detection systems, ESD 100 S and ESD 200 from model year 2010. In this way, customers with older systems can benefit from the advantages of development in digital evaluation.
